Patient & Family

Every sudden cardiac arrest changes lives — not only for the patient, but also for their families, friends, and communities. At the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), we believe that patients and families should be at the heart of everything we do. Their voices, experiences, and stories help guide our mission to improve survival and recovery across Europe.

Supporting Survivors

Surviving sudden cardiac arrest is only the beginning of a longer journey. Recovery often comes with challenges — physical, emotional, and social. That is why the ERC works to ensure that survivors receive not only the right medical care, but also access to rehabilitation, psychological support, and long-term follow-up. We are committed to making sure that no survivor is left to face this journey alone.

Empowering Families

Family members and close friends are often the first witnesses of a cardiac arrest. Their quick actions — calling emergency services, starting CPR, or using an AED — can mean the difference between life and death. We aim to empower families with the knowledge and confidence to act in those critical moments. At the same time, we recognise that families also need support after an event, as they cope with stress, anxiety, and new responsibilities in caring for their loved one.

Giving Patients and Families a Voice

Patients and families bring unique perspectives to resuscitation science and policy. By involving them in our advocacy, research, and education, we ensure that our work reflects real needs and lived experiences. Through patient and family networks, testimonials, and collaborations, we strive to keep their voices central in shaping the future of resuscitation in Europe.
